BMW Issues Global Recall for Over Half a Million Vehicles Over Starter Fire Risk
BMW Group has launched a global recall affecting roughly 575,000 vehicles built between July 2020 and July 2022, citing a serious safety issue tied to their ignition systems. The problem stems from certain start devices that can activate more frequently than intended, accelerating wear on the starter solenoid.
In severe cases, this excessive wear can trigger electrical short circuits, leading to localized overheating of the starter motor. BMW warns that this creates a potential fire hazard, even while the vehicle is in motion. Vehicles outfitted with the same components during service or repairs are also included in the recall.
This is the second major recall BMW has issued recently for similar electrical faults. In September 2025, the automaker recalled over 330,000 vehicles due to short-circuit risks in starter-related parts.
BMW has yet to provide details on how the recall will be carried out, including the cost implications or which markets are most affected. With hundreds of thousands of vehicles involved, the campaign highlights ongoing challenges in the brand’s electrical system quality control.
Owners are advised to contact their local BMW dealer or check the automaker’s official recall database to see if their vehicle is impacted.
