Michelin’s New Energy Tires Boost EV Range

According to msn.com, Michelin has introduced two summer tire families aimed at electric vehicles, hybrids and internal combustion cars: the MICHELIN Primacy 5 Energy and the MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 Energy. Michelin says the new ranges can add up to 43 miles, or about 70 km, of driving range per charge by cutting rolling resistance through a package of innovations, including Energy Passive 2.0 Technology, functionalised elastomers, new resins and an optimised architecture.

The MICHELIN Primacy 5 Energy is positioned as a premium touring tyre and carries a rare Triple A rating for efficiency, wet grip and external noise. Michelin claims it stops up to 8 percent shorter on wet roads than the previous Primacy generation, delivers best-in-class longevity with up to 40 percent longer life than some rivals, and reduces fuel consumption by about 6 percent. Over the tyres lifetime that 6 percent improvement is estimated to save up to £147 or €169 and cut CO2 emissions by 327 kg, while also offering a quieter ride. The Primacy 5 Energy will be available in 33 sizes from 16 to 19 inches, covering a broad swath of passenger cars, including EVs.

The MICHELIN Pilot Sport 5 Energy targets drivers who want sportier handling without compromising efficiency. It carries an A rating for rolling resistance and uses technologies adapted from motorsport, such as Dynamic Response Technology, an Adaptive Grip Compound and MaxTouch Technology for more even wear on heavier electric vehicles. Michelin also points to endurance testing, noting the tyre sustained 300 km/h running during the Mercedes-AMG GT CONCEPT XX programme, where the car held 186 mph for nearly eight days in a world record attempt.

Both tyre lines are engineered to address typical EV challenges, such as high torque, increased curb weight and accelerated tread wear, while maintaining safety, durability and steering performance. Michelin says the ranges will be offered in a combined 52 sizes across both OEM fitments and the replacement market, and that they have received approvals from leading automakers.

Jean-Claude Pats, Michelins Automobile Director, summed up the programme by stressing there are no compromises between performance, safety, efficiency and longevity. The two new tyres are presented as part of Michelins broader push to support the transition to electrified mobility without forcing drivers to trade one attribute for another.
