BMW i3 Debuts as Second Neue Klasse Model

On March 22, 2026, BMW introduced the new BMW i3, the second production model built on its Neue Klasse electric vehicle architecture. The compact sedan is a key plank in BMW’s push to electrify its lineup, following the launch of the first Neue Klasse model earlier this year. BMW positions the i3 as a premium compact EV aimed at urban buyers and younger demographics.

Under the sheetmetal the i3 uses sixth generation BMW eDrive hardware, a package BMW says delivers improved efficiency, stronger performance, and better range. The company highlights new cylindrical battery cells with higher energy density, claiming up to 30 percent more range compared with prior generations. BMW estimates range at roughly 300 to 350 miles on a single charge, depending on which variant a buyer chooses.

Charging capability is upgraded as well, with DC fast charging up to 200 kW. BMW says the i3 can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 25 minutes on a compatible charger. Those numbers, combined with the claimed energy density gains, are meant to make the i3 competitive in real-world daily use as well as longer trips.

The exterior dresses the car in a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette tuned for urban mobility and efficiency. Inside, BMW emphasizes a roomy cabin built from sustainable materials, and a user interface centered on a Panoramic iDrive system with a large curved display. The software is part of BMW’s new stack, enabling over-the-air updates and a Level 2 plus set of driver assistance features.

BMW links the i3 launch to broader corporate targets unveiled at its annual meeting. The company reiterated plans to bring 20 fully electric models to market across its brands by the end of 2026, and to reach roughly 18 percent of global sales from EVs. Executives say the Neue Klasse, and the i3 in particular, will help the brand win younger customers and strengthen its presence in dense, urban markets.

Production is slated to begin in late 2026 at BMW’s plant in Debrecen, Hungary, with U.S. deliveries expected to start in early 2027. Pricing is expected to start around $45,000 to $50,000, a level analysts say could make the i3 a volume leader within BMW’s EV portfolio if demand matches expectations. Those analysts add the model could help BMW on its path to carbon neutrality by 2030.

The announcement arrives amid shifting market dynamics. EV registrations have fallen in some markets and some automakers are shifting emphasis back toward hybrids. Tariffs and softening demand have also complicated the landscape. Despite those headwinds, BMW is publicly optimistic about the Neue Klasse strategy and the i3’s role within it.

“The Neue Klasse is our technological revolution, and the i3 embodies the future of electric mobility,” said a BMW spokesperson in the official press release. BMW plans to position the i3 against rivals such as the Tesla Model 3 and forthcoming compact EVs from Mercedes and Audi.
