Nokian Hakkapeliitta 01: Adaptive Studded Winter Tire

According to www.thomasnet.com, Nokian Tyres has introduced the Hakkapeliitta 01, the first studded winter tire with on-demand technology that automatically reacts to temperature changes.

Nokian calls the feature Double Action Stud Technology. Each tire carries roughly 220 tungsten carbide studs that extend when temperatures fall below freezing, improving ice traction by about 10 percent over the previous Hakkapeliitta model. When the road warms, or when conditions are wet or dry, the studs retract to restore full tread contact.

There are no electronics, switches, or driver intervention required. A temperature-responsive base layer alternates between a firmer state in cold weather, which pushes the studs out, and a softer state in warmth, which draws them back in. The system is designed to react quickly to real-world shifts, such as sudden thaws, so the tire adapts as conditions change.

The adaptive stud behavior brings measurable gains beyond ice grip. Nokian says road surface wear is reduced by 30 percent compared with conventional studded tires. Wet traction improves by about 5 percent, and noise is reduced by up to 1 decibel versus traditional studded options.

Tread design supports the stud system with a symmetrical pattern, aggressive snow channels, and self-locking 3D sipes that hold the shoulder blocks steady under load. Stud orientation varies across the tread, with longitudinal placement down the center for better acceleration and braking, and lateral studs on the shoulders to aid cornering. Select sizes also offer Aramid-reinforced sidewalls for added impact resistance and SilentDrive Technology with acoustic foam to lower cabin noise, a useful feature for electric vehicles.

The rubber compound leans on sustainable inputs, including natural rubber, bio-resins, and oils sourced from pine resin and canola. The Hakkapeliitta 01 carries both Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake and Ice Grip certifications, reflecting its winter performance credentials.

Nokian will produce the tire in Nokia, Finland. It will be offered in 122-124 sizes covering 14- to 22-inch wheels for cars, crossovers, and SUVs. The launch is scheduled for autumn 2026 in Nordic markets and North America.

The Hakkapeliitta 01 targets long-standing objections to studded tires, namely noise, pavement wear, and environmental impact, while improving safety in variable winter conditions. It is a clear step toward making studded tires more adaptable to mixed winter weather.
